Smog Test

Among the most stringent automobile emissions laws nationwide, California's are probably the toughest.

All vehicles registered in California must heve a smog test, also known as a smog check of vehicle emissions test, every two years.

electric-powered vehicles
natural gas-powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs
Vehicles that are six years old or newer. You will be charged an annual smog abatement fee when you register your vehicle, instead of being required to provide smog certification.
Vehicles registered in the portion of certain zip codes that are within the boundries of El Dorado, Placer, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Sonoma Counties do not require a smog test. To find out the status where you live, check with the Department of Consumer Affairs, not the Bureau of Automotive Repair, which actually administers the program. Welcome to California!

Exceptions to the Exceptions (DO need smog test!):

Non-resident and custom-built cars made since 1976.

Warning! Check with the Department of Motor Vehicles to confirm your vehicle's status, as the regulations change often!

"Test-Only" facilities legally cannot perform any mechanical repairs on your vehicle to help it pass the smog test. It's just "pass" or "fail". If your vehicle fails the smog test, any needed repairs and adjustments must be made by a licensed mechanic in a shop that the state has certified to perform the work. Superior Automotive is a Licensed California "Test and Repair" station, certified to make any and all repairs that may be necessary to get your car, truck, van or RV to pass the smog check.

Important note:
If your vehicle's "check engine" light is on, for ANY reason, the laws of the state of California classify the test results as a "failed test", even if your emission readings are completely with the required limit. Whatever is causing the "check engine" light to come on must be corrected, BEFORE the smog test can be performed.
